DCNR Motorized Trails Grants

The DCNR Motorized Trails Grants program supports the development and maintenance of motorized recreational trails in Pennsylvania. Funded by the Federal Highway Administration, the program aims to enhance trail facilities for snowmobiling, ATV riding, and off-highway motorcycle riding. Eligible applicants include government agencies, educational institutions, and non-profits. Grant funding can cover up to 80% of eligible project costs, ensuring safer and more accessible trails for outdoor enthusiasts.

Pennsylvania Recreational Trails (PRT) motorized projects. PRT motorized projects include the development, rehabilitation or maintenance of designated routes on land for all types of motorized recreation activities. Funding for projects in this category comes from the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), and DCNR is the designated state agency to administer this federal program in Pennsylvania. ONLY motorized trail projects applying for PRT funding should be submitted in this category. Match requirements are established at a minimum of 20%.
Development, Rehabilitation, or Maintenance
Trail Development Projects involve new construction, rehabilitation and/or maintenance of existing land and water motorized trails and motorized trail-related facilities for recreational activities.
Educational Programs
Educational Program Projects involve the development and operation of educational programs that promote safety and environmental protection as those objective related to the use of recreational motorized trails.
Motorized Trail Projects
Motorized trail projects include projects related to trails or trail facilities intended for uses such as:

• Snowmobiling
• Four-wheel driving
• All-terrain vehicle (ATV) riding
• Off-highway motorcycle riding

Eligibility

Eligible applicants include federal and state agencies, local governments, higher education and other educational institutions, non-profits and for-profit enterprises.Grants are provided to assist with the construction, renovation and maintenance of trails and trail related facilities for both motorized and non-motorized recreational trail, and the development of educational materials and programs.The Department provides grant funding not to exceed 80% of eligible costs.

DCNR is not accepting applications for equipment purchases at this time.
