Overview

About The Foundation Coshocton Foundation BuildingThe Coshocton Foundation was created in 1967 through a $685,000 bequest from Adolph Golden, a prominent Coshocton merchant and harness racing enthusiast. The foundation originally was a single fund from which all grants were made. In 1989, the late Edward and Frances Montgomery gave broader giving a significant boost by establishing a challenge fund that would match gifts to the Foundation's unrestricted fund. The fund was set up to match a maximum of $500,000 over a period of ten years. The Montgomery challenge spurred many gifts from a broader base of donors. The breadth of that donor base continues to grow as more and more people become aware of the Foundation's activities and aware of the fact that gifts of any size are welcome and beneficial to the Coshocton County community. Three trustees guide the Foundation’s operations. The judge of the probate court appoints all three trustees. The Foundation's Distribution Committee has five members and it has autonomous authority to issue grants from the unrestricted fund. The committee may also approve grants from some restricted funds. One member of the committee is appointed by each of the following: Common Pleas Judge, Probate Court Judge, Coshocton Mayor, and the presiding officer of the County Commissioners; the final member is selected by the four appointed members. Members of the committee select the chairman. Terms are for five years with one term ending each year. The By-Laws were amended in January of 2018, limiting newly appointed members may serve only one term. The Trustees took this action to allow for more input from local, community-minded citizens with new perspectives on tackling issues and seizing opportunities. The foundation also has a five-member investment committee which meets quarterly with investment advisors to review performance and analyze strategies for maximizing the foundation's assets.
