Overview

Community Foundation of Eastern Connecticut The Community Foundation of Eastern Connecticut (CFECT) was founded in 1983 to serve 42 towns across the eastern region of the state. With an asset base exceeding $120 million and over $100 million awarded in grants and scholarships, the Foundation acts as a philanthropic hub connecting donors to community needs and opportunities. Its mission is to collaborate with partners to put philanthropy into action—addressing the needs, rights, and interests of the people of Eastern Connecticut. Guided by values of equity, social justice, transparency, accountability, and inclusivity, CFECT focuses on four key priorities: empowering youth, advancing basic needs and rights, preserving the environment, and promoting animal welfare. Through grantmaking, advocacy, and collaboration, the Foundation works to eliminate racial and economic disparities, uplift historically marginalized voices, and create lasting, positive change for a more equitable and sustainable future. Cornelius and Mary Jane York Scholarship The scholarship is given in memory of Clarence B. Sharp, former mayor of Groton, he was responsible for much of the development of the Thames River harbor at New London and Groton, including construction of piers at the Submarine Base, the Naval Underwater Systems Center and the General Dynamics‐Electric Boat Division, a submarine and shipbuilding yard.
