Overview

Conservation Open Space Fund

Purpose: Supports acquiring, maintaining and restoring open space in the Martis Valley region.

Geographic Scope: Eastern Placer County or elsewhere in the region

Focus Areas:

  • Acquisition of open space

  • Maintaining and restoring protected open space lands

  • Ground-level projects such as meadow restoration, erosion control, tree planting

  • Programs supporting project implementation (planning, conservation value assessments, institutional capacity building)
  • Eligibility:

  • Applicant must be a 501(c)(3) organization

  • Project/program must be located in eastern Placer County or elsewhere in the region

  • Must result in acquisition of permanent open space OR management/restoration of protected lands for optimal conservation values

  • Must leverage or develop existing institutional capacity and other funding sources
  • What They Don't Fund:

  • Projects that duplicate efforts of other organizations (except for partnerships/matching)

  • Projects involving direct political or religious activities

  • Debt reduction or loans

  • Activities already funded or for which other funding is currently being sought

  • Completed activities (except existing or proposed matching funds)
  • Application Process:

  • Must contact the Martis Fund FIRST prior to submitting application

  • Board meets quarterly: March, June, September, November

  • How to Apply

    Application Process

    1. Review guidelines on the Martis Fund website to understand program requirements

    2. Contact the Martis Fund first to discuss your project and determine eligibility

    3. Submit Letter of Inquiry (LOI) with the following information:
    - Organization details (name, 501(c)(3) status, contact information)
    - Project name and location
    - Project start and end dates
    - Project summary (150 words max)
    - Total project cost
    - Proposed cost allocation:
    - Applicant funds (in-kind and cash)
    - Martis Fund request
    - Committed funders
    - Projected funders (with descriptions of sources)
    - Proposed grant payment terms (lump sum, progress payments, matching, or other)

    4. Submission: Complete the LOI form at https://martisfund.org/letter-of-inquiry/

    5. Timeline:
    - Board meets quarterly: March, June, September, November
    - Submit applications by the 1st of each meeting month to be considered
