Approach:
Recognizing that disasters can strike where and when least expected, the Foundation approaches this focus area differently from its other grant programs. The Foundation partners with national and local community-based organizations in advance of, during, and after disasters.

Eligibility:

Community-based nonprofit organizations

Must be exempt from federal income tax under section 501(c)(3)

Must be a public charity described in section 509(a)(1) or (a)(3)

Must not be a section 509(a)(3) type III nonfunctionally integrated organization

Grant Terms:

Generally 1-3 years in duration

Grant ranges are open; funding levels determined based on need and plan presented

Organizations cannot receive overlapping grants from the foundation

Status: This is a responsive/flexible program; the Foundation works with organizations proactively rather than through traditional application cycles
