Community Impact Grants

Overview: Community Impact Grants are how United Way of Henry County (UWHCM) invests local contributions from their Annual Campaign to fight for education, financial security, health, and basic needs of every person in Martinsville and Henry County.

Geographic Scope: Martinsville and Henry County, Virginia

  • Funding Process: Funding decisions are made through an annual competitive process. Area programs and initiatives undergo rigorous vetting by a Community Investment Committee composed of 20-30 volunteers.

    Eligibility Requirements

    Eligible organizations must:
    1. Document nonprofit status and reflect services meet a recognized human service need
    2. Prohibit discrimination by an individual's sex, race, color, national origin, age, religion, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity, or any other legally protected characteristic
    3. Operate on a sound financial basis in accordance with GAAP and maintain adequate accounting and reporting systems:
    - If operating budget exceeds $150,000: require annual audit
    - If operating budget under $150,000: require annual financial review
    4. Be anti-terrorism compliant with the USA Patriot Act and other counter-terrorism laws
    5. Complete a formal program funding agreement prior to receiving a grant award

    Ineligible Programs

    Grant proposals seeking funds for the following will be deemed ineligible:

  • Political purposes or programs requiring religious participation

  • Fundraising expenses or debt reduction

  • Activities contrary to the goals, aspirations, and policies of United Way or incompatible with UWHCM's mission
