_NOTE: If you have an idea for a grant request that you would like the foundation to consider, the first step is to submit a concept paper through our online portal. The concept paper should include a brief description of your organization’s mission and work, and a summary of the purpose of the request. After submitting your concept paper, JGBF staff will review your request and respond to you as quickly as possible. You can usually expect a response within three weeks, but occasionally it takes longer. Please plan to submit your request well in advance of the proposal deadline._

Area of Impact: Community  & Economic Prosperity

The James Graham Brown Foundation (JGBF) makes Community & Economic Prosperity grants in two locations—Louisville’s West End and Eastern Kentucky. Despite a rich heritage and unique assets, Kentucky’s progress and image have long been overshadowed by acute problems, often stemming from poverty, inequality and their root causes. Traditional economic development efforts have not adequately supported communities to address these issues, particularly in the target geographies for this focus area.

JGBF believes that when community voices are prioritized and given access to resources to invest in their own solutions, it will enable pathways to prosperity. Funding priorities include increasing coordination among and between funders and developers, strengthening community development institutions and providing capacity building in the communities the foundation works with.

The COVID-19 pandemic and the national conversation on race sparked by the wrongful deaths of Breonna Taylor, David McAtee, George Floyd and others have influenced these grantmaking priorities dramatically. Addressing the impacts of the pandemic and systemic inequity are not mutually exclusive. COVID-related hardships have affected Black and Latinx communities most intensely, especially those in poverty.
