Overview

Coastal CARES Student Emergency Fund

Purpose: Provide emergency grants to assist qualifying students who have experienced hardships as a result of the COVID-19 crisis.

Geographic Scope: College of Coastal Georgia, Brunswick, Georgia

Funding Source: Federal CARES Act funds passed by Congress and signed into law by President Trump on March 13, 2020

Eligible Uses:

  • Food

  • Housing

  • Course materials

  • Technology

  • Health care

  • Child care

  • Other unexpected emergency expenses related to cost of attendance

  • Supplement amounts already received in Parts 1 and 2 of the Coastal CARES grant
  • Eligibility Requirements - Must meet ALL of the following:

  • Full or part-time student at College of Coastal Georgia

  • NOT exclusively enrolled in online courses as of March 13, 2020

  • Completed the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for 2019-2020 academic year

  • Qualify for Title IV funds (eligible to receive federal loans/grants)

  • Must have qualified for Parts 1 and/or 2 of the Coastal CARES grant to qualify for emergency funds
  • Not Eligible:

  • Students classified as Transient

  • Non-degree seeking students

  • Dual Enrollment students

  • Students enrolled entirely online as of March 13, 2020
  • Award Amount: Average of $500, determined based on request, demonstration of need, and availability of funds

    Important Notes:

  • This is NOT a loan - funds do not need to be repaid

  • These are federal funds from the CARES Act

  • Awards are tracked by Financial Aid for student retention monitoring and reporting
  • Decision Timeline:

  • Emergency Fund Review Committee meets twice weekly (Tuesdays and Thursdays)

  • Application deadline for review: 8am Mondays and Wednesdays

  • Students notified of decision within 48 hours of committee meeting

  • How to Apply

    How to Apply

    1. Access the application through the online application portal

    2. Provide required information:
    - Detailed written statement explaining:
    - How COVID-19 pandemic has impacted ability to cover cost of attendance at College of Coastal Georgia
    - Specific reason for requesting funding above amounts already received in Parts 1 and/or 2 of Coastal CARES grant
    - Supporting documentation (see below)

    3. Submit supporting documentation, which may include:
    - Copies of bills, invoices, receipts
    - Letters of support
    - Notices of unemployment or reduced hours
    - Any documentation with detailed information (names, dates, services, amounts)

    4. Submit application with all required materials before the Monday or Wednesday 8am deadline for the next committee meeting
