Circle of Caring Scholarship Program

A workforce development initiative created by Pardee Hospital Foundation to support UNC Health Pardee employees in their pursuit of continued education and professional growth.

Background: The program originated from an idea by Dr. Joel Callahan (Chief of Staff) and Dr. Gregory McCarty (Chief Medical Officer) to cultivate a culture of learning that benefits both staff and patients. Concept developed in 2023, launched as fully developed program with strong donor and hospital support.

Geographic Scope: UNC Health Pardee, Hendersonville, NC

Funding Sources: Most ongoing funding comes from employee payroll contributions (bi-weekly). Additional support from retired physicians and community members, local businesses, and former healthcare professionals.

Focus Areas - Eligible Development Opportunities:

• Non-tuition-based professional development
• Medical-based certifications
• Leadership development or certifications
• Conferences, seminars, or summits
• Research or process improvement education
• Technical training

Eligibility Requirements:

• Must be employed at Pardee for at least one year
• Must provide documented educational or professional development plan approved by supervisor
• Must not be under any disciplinary or corrective action at time of application
• Not eligible: Employees at director level and above

Post-Award Requirements:

• Must complete training within one year of scholarship approval
• Must remain employed at Pardee for at least one year after completing training

Program Impact: Over 60 employees applied in current cycle (doubled from inaugural cycle). 11 inaugural recipients recognized: Makina Smith, Eden Sparks, Michala Jackson, Joseph Zanolli, Robert Anthony Errico, Amber Peterson, Angela Rogers, Karon Edge, and Teresa McMurray.

Application Process

1. Prepare Application Materials:
   • Complete scholarship application form
   • Provide documented educational or professional development plan
   • Obtain supervisor approval of development plan
   • Ensure compliance with eligibility requirements
2. Submit Application:
   • Contact Pardee Hospital Foundation
   • Submit during designated application cycle
3. Award Notification:
   • Recipients selected for dedication to advancing professional skills
   • Special recognition ceremony held for recipients
4. Post-Award:
   • Complete training within one year of approval
   • Maintain employment at Pardee for one year after training completion
   • Contribute to strengthening hospital mission and reducing turnover

• Employment verification (minimum 1 year tenure)
