The charities who apply go through a rigorous and thorough grant selection process that includes financial, leadership and program review, site visits and evaluative follow-up after the money is distributed to assure compliance with all grant requirements. Grants are to assist not-for-profit agencies and organizations located and serving children in Bexar County. In most cases, an applicant should be directed to regular funding cycle opportunities. The Children’s Opportunity Fund is established to meet emergent, immediate and critical needs arising from circumstances or conditions that negatively impact one or more fundamental needs of children 0-18.

Funding Policies: For those requests that are accepted for review, the following criteria will be used to evaluate their merits: The use of the requested funds must measurably advance the mission of The Charity Ball Association of San Antonio, Inc. and that of the requesting entity.Requested funding must have an immediate positive effect on a group of children.The need for funds must be occasioned by circumstances or conditions that have put children’s well-being at risk.There must be a compelling reason why the funds are needed sooner than the normal funding procedures can accommodate.A grant will be made only for a well-defined, specific project.All funds received under this policy must be spent within sixty days of the receipt of funds unless otherwise agreed by The Charity Ball Association. Funds not used within the agreed period will be returned within fourteen days of the expiration of the specified period.Agency must have been in operation for at least two years.Receipt of funds granted under this policy does not preclude the grantee from applying for grants under the regular cycle funding policies.Agencies should be prepared for site visits in order to fully evaluate the application.Funded agencies will be required to sign a Use of Funds Agreement and a Substantial Completion Form and/or a Purchase Verification and Documentation of Payment Form.Funded agencies will be subject to periodic reviews and reporting requirements by The Charity Ball AssociationGrants will be considered for the following:Repairs to buildings and improvements to real property. If requesting funds for major repair of buildings, or any project requiring a contractor, two competitive bids are required.Providing or improving non-disposable equipment or furnishings. If requesting funds for non-disposable equipment or furnishings, cost estimates, supported by price sheets, quotes or other documentation, are required.Food, clothing, materials, supplies, furnishings, technology, or equipment needed to respond to a crisis or address an unmet need.

Ineligibility

Grants will not be considered for the following:Projects which take place outside of Bexar County regardless of the location of the agencySalaries, contributions, scholarships or incentivesPurchase of automobiles, vans, buses or any other means of transportation or transportation feesDonations to a Capital CampaignDebt service or deficit reductionLoans or loan guaranteesAdmission fees, trophies, prizes, medals, consumables or field tripsThe Association does not accept appeals or letters of support on behalf of an agency.
