Carroll Brunthaver Scholarship

    Carroll Grant Brunthaver Jr. (1932-2020) was an avid champion of education and relentless supporter of Peer Power. He earned his Ph.D. in Agricultural Economics from Ohio State University and had an distinguished career including:

  • Assistant Secretary of Agriculture for Domestic and Foreign Affairs under the Nixon Administration
  • President of the Commodity Credit Corporation
  • Chairman of the Federal Crop Insurance Corporation
  • Co-founder and CEO of Sparks Commodities Research Firm (now Informa)
  • Trader at McVean Trading and Investments in Memphis

His family and colleagues established this fund in his honor.

Selection Criteria

Peer Power considers three areas of measurement: 1. Academic Merit – Transcript (including course rigor and GPA) and standardized test scores, plus awards and accomplishments 2. Volunteer Impact – Work as an organizer and leader of school and/or community volunteer activities 3. Strong Personal Character – Demonstrated through recommendation letters and a 250-word essay

    Eligibility Requirements

  • Graduating high school senior from one of these Peer Power partner schools: Douglass High School, East High School, Hamilton High School, Kingsbury High School, Melrose High School, Ridgeway High School, or Whitehaven High School
  • Admitted to and planning to attend the University of Memphis
  • Demonstrate financial need via FAFSA or CSS Profile
  • Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher as documented via official high school transcript
  • Submit a 250-word essay
