Capital Artist Residency

Overview: An annual initiative dedicated to supporting artists of color whose work contributes to regional and national artistic dialogue.

Geographic Scope: Washington, D.C.

Eligibility:

  • Visual or multidisciplinary BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) artists

  • Artists whose work contributes to regional and national artistic dialogue

  • Selection process involves nominations (not direct applications)

  • Family-friendly housing for 1-3 months

  • Studio or rehearsal space for 1-3 months

  • About the Program:
    The program sponsors, promotes, and houses at least one visual or multidisciplinary BIPOC artist each year in Washington, D.C., offering a creative space tailored for the artist to develop and amplify their unique perspective from a national platform.

    Housing Provider: Jair Lynch Real Estate Partners provides housing during residencies.

    Recent Residents:

  • 2024-2025: Allana Clarke (Trinidadian-American artist from Detroit, MI)

  • 2022-2023: Nyugen E. Smith (Caribbean-American interdisciplinary artist from Jersey City, NJ)

  • 2021: Umar Rashid (Los Angeles-based artist, inaugural resident)
  • Application Process: Nomination-based. The nomination process opens in Fall for the following year's residency.
