Overview

BWLA Fall Book Scholarship Award

Funder: Black Women Lawyers' Association Scholarship Fund (BWLA-SF)

Purpose: To meet a portion of the financial need of current law students

Award: BWLA-SF will award up to ten $1,000.00 dollar book scholarships. Scholarship recipients will be invited to and recognized at BWLA 2024 Sips for Scholarships.

Geographic Scope: Chicagoland area and demonstrated connection to Chicago legal market

Focus Areas: Legal education support; financial aid for law students; promotes diversity in the legal profession

Eligibility:

  • Must be of Black or African descent

  • Complete and sign the application, including answering all application questions

  • Attend an ABA-accredited law school in the Chicagoland area OR have a demonstrated present or future connection to the Chicago legal market

  • Demonstrate a commitment to public service or diversity (evidenced by current leadership or participation in community service or outreach)

  • Have unmet financial needs

  • Supply an official transcript and a letter of good standing from your school's registrar
  • Selection Criteria:

  • Professionalism of application materials (incomplete or incorrectly formatted application materials will be disqualified)

  • Commitment to public service and diversity

  • Professional and academic achievement

  • Unmet financial need

  • BWLA involvement

  • Applications with excessive typographical and/or grammatical errors may be disqualified

    How to Apply

    Application Submission Process

    1. Format Requirements:
    - Each application must be typewritten and converted to a PDF
    - Combine application with all supporting documentation into ONE PDF file
    - Letter of good standing or transcript may be sent directly from the applicant's law school depending on the institution's policies
    - Applications submitted in other formats or as more than one PDF file will NOT be considered

    2. Submission Instructions:
    - Email the combined PDF file to: scholarship@bwla.org

    3. Deadline:
    - Application and all documentation must be received by Friday, October 18, 2026 at 11:59 p.m. CST

    4. Required Materials:
    - Completed and signed application form
    - Official transcript
    - Letter of good standing from school's registrar
    - All application questions must be answered
