Black Hills Food Response Fund

Funder: Black Hills Area Community Foundation, in partnership with the Sustaining Black Hills Nonprofits Fund (John T. Vucurevich Foundation and Bush Foundation)

Overview: An emergency fund activated to help local nonprofits respond to rising need for food assistance amid federal SNAP disruptions and government shutdown. This is a community fundraising initiative with matching support.

Status: Emergency response fund (activated November 2025)

Geographic Scope: Black Hills region (Butte, Lawrence, Meade, Pennington, Custer, Oglala Lakota, and Fall River counties)

Local nonprofit food services

Feeding South Dakota's Black Hills programs

Community food pantries and resources

Context:

19,976 SNAP recipients in Black Hills area expected to experience disruptions

Includes more than 8,500 children

Many food pantries reported serving new families and running out of food more quickly than usual

50% of funds raised support Feeding South Dakota

50% of funds raised support local nonprofit food resources
