Purpose

The Thursday Club Foundation exclusively funds capital items for San Diego County nonprofits.

    Eligibility Requirements

    All candidates must meet these requirements:
  • Tax Status: Federal 501(c)(3) and State 23701(d) tax-exempt charitable status for at least 2 years
  • Location: Established and operating in San Diego County for at least 2 years
  • Budget: Current annual operating budget may not exceed $3,000,000 (exception: organizations in Balboa Park)
  • Prior Grants: Applicants who received a grant within the last 3 calendar years are not eligible
  • Organization Structure: One arm per tax ID per grant cycle (multi-faceted organizations)
  • Schools: Public or private schools must have Federal 501(c)(3) status or apply through an associated foundation/group (PTA, Foundation, Friends group)
  • Tax Status Types: Only Federal 501(c)(3) status qualifies; no other forms of tax-exempt status accepted
  • Not Eligible: Municipalities, government agencies

    What They Fund

  • Capital items only
  • Items that will be used in and benefit San Diego County inhabitants
  • Approved items must be purchased within 60 days of fund receipt

    What They Do NOT Fund

  • General operating expenses (rent, mortgage, utilities, dues, subscriptions, warranties, service contracts)
  • Individuals, salaries, programs, training
  • User licenses, separately purchased software
  • Items for distribution
  • Bank/investment accounts, endowments, general reserve funds
  • Operation costs, vehicle wraps
  • Capital campaigns, building/construction costs, real estate acquisition
  • Political or religious purposes
  • Existing obligations, deficits, debts, leases, reimbursements

June 1 to July 15 (annual, once per year)

    Review Process

  • The Thursday Club, Thursday Club Juniors, and Thursday Club Professional Benevolence Committees review all eligible applications
  • Site visits required after initial review of eligible applications
  • Applicants will be contacted to schedule site visit if they meet guidelines and provide all required documents
  • Applications not meeting guidelines or missing requested information will not be considered

    Funding Requirements & Restrictions

  • Grant checks made payable only to the granted nonprofit entity/organization
  • Funds may only be used for items specifically approved by the Foundation
  • Proof of purchase required within 60 days of fund receipt
  • Any remaining funds after approved item purchase must be returned promptly
  • Failure to provide proof of purchase or return funds disqualifies organization from future grants
  • Misuse of funds results in forfeiture of funding rights and potential demand for repayment, plus optional exclusion from future eligibility

    Reporting Requirements

  • By December 31, 2026: Submit balance sheet and income statement with supporting documentation confirming expenditure of all funds
  • Extensions may be considered on case-by-case basis by Foundation Board

Step-by-Step Process

1. Complete the online application form at thethursdayclub.org 2. Provide all required supporting documents 3. Submit by July 15 deadline 4. Receive acknowledgment of receipt within 48 hours (contact Director of Philanthropy if not received) 5. If eligible, Thursday Club Philanthropy Committee will contact you to schedule a site visit 6. Site visit with representative available to speak to the group (if requested) 7. Grant decision notification 8. If awarded, funds distributed in May 2027 9. Provide proof of purchase within 60 days of receipt 10. Submit financial reports by December 31, 2026
