Overview

Belanger-Cushman Award

Purpose: Honor graduating seniors for personal growth throughout their high school career.

History: Created by Emily Belanger to honor her mother, Jane, who was a teacher and guidance counselor for over 30 years. Jane established a tradition of recognizing the student who had grown the most academically and personally over four years, rather than only those who excelled naturally. Emily amended the award to include all graduating seniors from Educate Youth with an annual award of $250.

Eligibility:

  • Graduating high school seniors who participate in Educate Youth programming

  • Students who demonstrate growth in personal, emotional, and academic dimensions

  • Demonstrated qualities include: fault acknowledgement, leadership, thoughtfulness, encouragement, empathy, self-awareness, and ability to recognize privilege and misfortunes
  • Focus Areas:

  • Personal growth and development

  • Emotional growth

  • Academic growth and improvement

  • Leadership qualities

  • Character development (selflessness, patience, empathy, self-motivation, drive)
  • Geographic Scope: Ypsilanti, Michigan
