Baer Reintegration Scholarship

Program Goal: To help people with schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, or bipolar disorder acquire the educational and vocational skills necessary to reintegrate into society, secure jobs, and regain their lives.

Background

The Sidney R. Baer, Jr. Foundation supports efforts of organizations working to stimulate education, research, and direct care in the mental health field. Founder Sidney R. Baer, Jr. personally faced mental health challenges and sought to alleviate the suffering of those living with mental illness.

    Eligibility Requirements

    Applicants must:
  • Be diagnosed with bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, or schizoaffective disorder
  • Be currently receiving medical treatment for the disease, including medications and psychiatric follow-up, or have prescribing authority's documentation of past history on Recommendation Form
  • Be actively involved in rehabilitative or reintegration efforts (clubhouse membership, part-time or full-time employment, volunteer efforts, or school enrollment)
  • Be a U.S. citizen or legal resident and plan to attend school in the United States
  • Be age 18 years or older by the beginning of the academic school year

    What is Funded

    Scholarship money is sent directly to educational institutions to defray costs of:
  • Tuition
  • Books
  • Laboratory supplies
  • Mandatory fees

    What is NOT Funded

  • Summer classes
  • Transportation
  • Computer
  • Room and board expenses
  • Personal expenses

    Award Information

  • Award Amounts: Vary from a few hundred to several thousand dollars, determined case-by-case based on financial needs and educational goals
  • Academic Year: Fall 2026 - Spring 2027 school year
  • Renewal: Past winners must reapply annually on an annual basis to renew their scholarship
  • Funds Remaining: All monies remaining at the end of spring semester must be returned to the scholarship fund

    Selection Criteria

    Applications are judged on:
  • Academic success
  • References from three individuals, including applicant's psychiatrist or prescribing authority
  • Quality of essay
  • Thoughtfulness and appropriateness of academic and vocational/career goals
  • Rehabilitation involvement
  • Success in dealing with the disease
  • Recent volunteer and/or vocational experience
  • Completion of all application requirements

    Selection Process

  • Independent Judging Panel: Comprised of psychiatric care professionals and consumers
  • Panel Decisions: Final and confidential
  • Notification: All applicants notified in May 2026
  • Winner Notification: Winners notified in July 2026
  • Application Destruction: All materials destroyed after judging; not returned to applicants

Program Status

NOTE: The 2026-2027 application is now closed as of today (2026-04-03). The next application deadline will be January 31, 2027 for the 2027-2028 academic year.

    1. Eligibility Quiz
    - All applicants must complete a brief eligibility quiz before applying

    2. Complete Online Application (via SmarterSelect)
    - Create account in SmarterSelect
    - Save, edit, and adjust application over time
    - Use built-in checklist to ensure completion
    - Submit digitally
    - Applicants can email questions directly from the application

    3. Essay Submission
    - Length: No longer than four double-spaced typed pages
    - Format: Must include seven separate sections with clearly stated headings
    - Required Sections:
    1. My Career Goal and My Rationale for Choosing This Goal
    2. How This Course of Study Will Help Me Achieve My Career Goal
    3. How My Illness Has Impacted My Ability to Succeed in School, Maintain Employment or Establish Relationships
    4. Steps I Have Taken to Prepare for Pursuit of This Education
    5. Rationale for the Specific School Chosen
    6. My Plans to Continue Treatment While Pursuing an Education
    7. My Efforts to Reintegrate through Community Involvement
    - Note: Essays without clearly stated section headings will not be accepted

    4. Recommendation Forms (3 Required)
    - First Recommendation (Required): From applicant's psychiatrist or prescribing authority
    - Verifies qualifying mental health diagnosis
    - Applications without this form are disqualified
    - Alternative: Facesheet from medical records documenting diagnosis and current medications (not preferable)
    - Alternative: Statement on letterhead including applicant name, diagnosis, medication, and prescriber signature
    - Second and Third Recommendations (Required): General recommendations from:
    - Friends
    - Coworkers
    - Teachers
    - Therapists
    - Sponsors
    - Fellow community members
    - Other professional relations
    - Ineligible Recommenders: Family members cannot complete any recommendation forms
    - Submission Options:
    - Through online portal (SmarterSelect)
    - Download forms and submit separately via HIPAA-compliant portal or mail
    - Write letter of recommendation instead of completing form

    5. FAFSA Completion
    - Complete Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) through U.S. Department of Education
    - Apply online or contact school for application form
    - Do NOT mail FAFSA info with application
    - Proof Required: If chosen as finalist, must show proof of FAFSA completion prior to April 1, 2026
    - Exceptions: Not required for high school/GED applicants or some graduate school applicants (case-by-case basis)

    6. School Cost Documentation
    - Obtain and enclose copy of desired school's statement of standard costs from school's website or financial aid office
    - Include costs for: tuition, books, lab supplies, and mandatory fees
    - If applying to multiple schools, include standard costs from all potential schools

    7. Optional Extra Materials (Maximum 3 items)
    - Resume
    - Writing sample
    - Picture of artwork
    - Completion certificate
    - Other relevant materials

    8. Personal Consent & Release Form
    - Must sign as part of application completion requirement

    Renewal Application Process

    For Past Winners Reapplying Annually:

    Must submit the following:

  • Current grade report

  • Updated application form

  • Recommendation form from prescribing authority

  • Signed Personal Consent & Release Form

  • Reconfirmation of goals and academic hours completed/remaining

  • Brief progress report form at midpoint of each semester (new requirement for 2026-27 academic year)
  • If Pursuing New Degree: Must submit completely new full application
