Arts Advocate Award

Overview: Introduced in 2023, The Arts Advocate Award honors individuals who have dedicated significant time, effort, and leadership that has positively impacted the creative economy and the arts in Johnson County.

Geographic Scope: Johnson County, Kansas

Award Criteria: Recognition may be awarded to individuals for:

  • Impact on arts education

  • Volunteer work in the arts

  • Work to increase access to the arts for underserved individuals and/or communities

  • Leadership in major arts initiatives

  • Efforts to increase funding and resources for the arts

  • Efforts to increase public awareness of the arts

  • Other significant contributions to the arts community
  • Award Type: Recognition award (non-monetary)

  • Nominations accepted from community members

  • Award committee reviews nominations

  • Recipients announced at the annual Creative Connections Breakfast (typically in December)
  • Program History:

  • Inaugurated in 2023

  • 3 recipients in 2023: Mayor Mike Boehm (Lenexa), Mayor Peggy Dunn (Leawood), and Nicole Emmanuel (Artist and Founder of InterUrban ArtHouse)

  • 4 recipients in 2025: Angi Cain Hejduk, Inas Younis, Kara Hettinger, and Sav Rodgers

    Nomination Process:
    1. Community members nominate individuals for the award
    2. Nominations are submitted through the Arts Council of Johnson County
