ArtPrenticeship

Overview: A paid summer apprenticeship where high school artists work with professional creators, build real skills, and design murals that become part of Waco's visual story.

Type: Youth education and professional development program

Geographic Scope: Waco, Texas

Eligibility:

  • High school students in Waco

  • Creative, motivated students with commitment and curiosity

  • No prior mural experience required
  • What Participants Receive:

  • Paid stipend for work completed

  • Mentorship from professional artists

  • Real-world creative experience

  • Portfolio development at city scale

  • Professional skills training (teamwork, communication, planning, execution)

  • Three-stage learning experience: Public Art, Studio Practice, Exhibition
  • Program Structure - Three Stages:

      Stage 1: Public Art in Action

    • Work alongside lead artists on public mural projects
    • Learn concept development and community context
    • Design refinement and scaling
    • Surface preparation and materials
    • Painting techniques and collaboration
    • Installation and final reveal

      Stage 2: Studio Practice and Skill Building

    • Develop individual studio art pieces with mentorship
    • Live demonstrations and technique workshops
    • Process critiques and work-in-progress reviews
    • Creation of smaller practice pieces leading to final work
    • Focus on voice, experimentation, and personal expression

      Stage 3: Exhibition at Washington Gallery

    • Public exhibition in professional gallery setting
    • Prepare artwork for display
    • Write artist statements
    • Install work
    • Engage with the public
