Overview

Arise COVID-19 Emergency Fund

Status: One-time emergency fund established in response to COVID-19 pandemic (2020)

Purpose: Provide small grants to frontline organisations and networks to help them provide essentials to communities in dire need during COVID-19 lockdowns

Funding Use

The funding enables frontline organisations to:

  • Provide essentials to communities where vulnerability to exploitation is heightened by COVID-19

  • Source and distribute essential supplies through "food banks" or "food drops" models

  • Focus on communities with precarious workers affected by business closures and job losses

  • Support those most vulnerable to exploitation due to pandemic impacts
  • Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must meet Arise's standard criteria:

  • Frontline organisation - locally led and founded

  • Geography - working in a country of origin

  • Prior work - before COVID-19, your organisation was working to prevent exploitation through human trafficking and modern day slavery

  • Current response - finding ways to assist the communities you were already serving amidst the COVID-19 pandemic emergency
  • Safety Requirements

    All grantees must:

  • Undertake and complete World Health Organisation (WHO) training

  • Display appropriate signage provided by Arise

  • Ring-fence 10% of Arise budget for protective equipment supplies for staff

  • Regularly review risks in consultation with Arise

  • Abide by government regulations

  • Exclusion: No grantee may permit anyone who lives in a community with people considered 'high-risk' to participate
  • Geographic Focus

    • India (Haryana, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, West Bengal, Assam)
    • Albania
    • Nepal

    Payment Methods

    • Direct international transfer (if eligible organisation)
    • Invoice arrangement through local organisation if direct transfer not possible
    • Organized in consultation with Arise

    Background

Established March 23, 2020 in response to frontline need. By April 2020, 14 organisations had received grants with another 32 in the funding pipeline. Grants focused on food provision rather than medical supplies, as migrant workers faced starvation due to lockdown-related job losses.
