Funder: Avila Beach Community Foundation

Geographic Scope: Avila Beach, CA and surrounding communities

Background:
The Avila Beach Community Foundation was created to manage an endowment established as part of the UNOCAL beach contamination clean-up settlement. Funds from the endowment are made available annually for grant-making purposes in an amount determined by the Foundation's Board of Trustees.

Application Window: July through early September annually for projects taking place during the ensuing calendar year

Review Process: Board of Trustees reviews grant requests and determines recipients each fall

Funding Goals:
The Foundation finances enhancement projects of:

  • Minor amounts

  • Major amounts

  • Co-sponsored projects with other organizations
  • Criteria for Consideration:
    The Board of Trustees will give favorable consideration to projects meeting all or most of the following:

  • Improvements in the physical, cultural and social well-being of residents and visitors

  • Enhancements beyond services normally provided by government and private agencies

  • Reflect the history and culture of the Avila Beach Community

  • Have support of a cross-section of Avila Beach residents and visitors

  • Provide for permanent improvements

  • Pre-existence of all elements of a successful project (leadership, responsibility, expertise, commitment, organization)

  • Pre-existence of any governmental support essential to the project

  • Ability to satisfy conditions established by the Foundation

  • Ability to fully accomplish the project within proposed funding without expectation of additional funding
  • Suggestions for Grant Applications:

  • Preservation of historical and cultural assets

  • Enhancement of overall beauty and/or infrastructure of Avila Beach Community

  • Improvement visible within the community

  • Stewardship and protection of the planet for future generations
  • Matching Contributions:
    The Foundation Board recognizes the value of seeking grants to leverage funding from other grant-making organizations. Applicants seeking matching grants may be given greater consideration during selection process.
