Overview

Anne G. Osborn ASNR International Outreach Professor Program

Purpose: A volunteer program for ASNR Senior members interested in teaching in developing countries. Facilitates the exchange of knowledge and techniques through volunteer professorship placements.

Program Overview:

  • Started in June 2017

  • Not a traditional visiting professor program but an outreach program where costs are shared between the ASNR member, the ASNR, and the host organization

  • Program was suspended in 2021 and 2022 due to COVID-19 but resumed in 2023

  • ASNR supports up to 10 placements per year

  • Applications open in late summer of every year
  • 2026 Host Countries: Argentina, Brazil (Recife), Brazil (Rio de Janeiro/São Paulo), Chile, Colombia, Egypt, Ethiopia, Ghana (Accra) – 2 locations, Indonesia, and Tanzania

    Eligibility:

  • ASNR Senior members

  • Must be an enthusiastic teacher with excellent teaching skills

  • Preference given to members who have not been an outreach professor in the past
  • Award Includes:

  • $2,000 (U.S. funds) travel reimbursement

  • Certificate upon completion of the professorship

  • Host country typically provides local housing, meals, and local transportation

  • Minimum length: one week (some countries may request and support longer exchanges)
  • Expected Teaching Activities:

  • Give approximately three lectures per week

  • Spend approximately four half-days in direct teaching sessions

  • Perform case reviews and teaching-file reviews

  • Participate in direct teacher-to-student "view-box"/"workstation" teaching

  • May be asked to speak at local or regional continuing education events
  • Selection Process:

  • Applications reviewed by ASNR, then submitted to host organization

  • Host organization has final decision on which ASNR members to host

  • "Match" held between applicant's and host country's rank orders

  • Preference given to first-time outreach professors
  • Post-Program Requirement:

  • Provide one-page report summarizing experience for publication on ASNR website
  • Geographic Scope: Developing countries in Central/South America, Africa, Asia, and Eastern Europe
