Overview

AmeriCorps Program

Status: Active recruitment for 2026-2027 program year

Geographic Scope: 18 counties in the Appalachian Forest National Heritage Area (West Virginia and Maryland)

Program Structure:

  • Service terms: 6 months (900 hours, averaging 35 hours per week)

  • Full-time positions

  • Flexible schedules adjusted to project and member needs

  • Most positions include some pre-scheduled evening and weekend activities

  • Positions start based on availability and end 6 months from start date
  • Service Requirement: Members are expected to continue service until the end of agreed service term

    Living Allowance & Benefits (2022-2023 rates):

  • Gross living allowance: $8,251 for 6-month term

  • Payable in 12 bi-monthly installments

  • Workers Compensation provided

  • Health insurance support available

  • Child care subsidy available for qualified candidates

  • SNAP benefits may be available for qualified members

  • WV Medicaid eligibility for AmeriCorps members

  • Member responsible for own living arrangements and costs

  • Some sites offer low-cost housing options

  • No resettlement or moving allowance included
  • Education Award:

  • Segal AmeriCorps Education Award: $3,247.50 upon successful completion of 900-hour term

  • Award can be used for college tuition, technical or vocational education, or qualified student loan repayment

  • Existing qualified student loans can be deferred during service with interest paid

  • Members 55+ may transfer award to child or grandchild
  • NEW: WV Public Schools Tuition Waiver Program

  • Starting Fall 2022, eligible AmeriCorps members who successfully complete service receive tuition waiver for same amount at WV public schools higher education institutions
  • Recruitment Timeline:

  • Prime recruitment season: May - August

  • Early September typical start date

  • Positions filled on rolling basis

  • Recruitment continues until all positions filled if needed

  • Selected candidates receive pre-interview form

  • Form includes opportunity to select positions of interest

  • General program interview with AFNHA

  • Follow-up individual interviews with specific host sites

  • Position offers may follow interviews
