Americanism Essay Contest

Annual patriotic essay competition sponsored by the Connecticut Elks Association through its Americanism Committee, part of the national Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks program.

Geographic Scope: Connecticut and nationwide (state-level participants compete in national competition)

Grade Levels: 5th through 8th grade (Grades 5-8)

Focus Areas:

• American patriotism
• Youth appreciation for country's heritage
• Patriotic values and citizenship

Theme: Changes annually (example: "What is your American Dream?")

Program Goals:

• Foster youth's appreciation and respect for patriotism
• Give school children opportunity to express pride in America
• Promote understanding of the country's heritage

Eligibility: 5th through 8th grade students in Connecticut

Competition Structure:

• Divisions: Separated by grade level (Grade 5, 6, 7, 8)
• Awards: Winners announced at state level
• Recognition: Winners featured in Connecticut Elks Association communications

Administration:

• Coordinated through Connecticut Elks Association Americanism Committee
• Lodges serve as local sponsors and coordinators
• District Chairmen oversee regional submissions and judging

Application Process

1. Submission Channel: Submit essays through your local Elks lodge (Americanism chairperson)
2. Lodge Submission: Each lodge submits their winner(s) for state competition
3. District Competition: Essays compete at district level with District Chairman oversight
4. Judging Criteria: Essays judged on the annual theme
5. Recognition: Winners announced by grade division
6. Timeline: Submit by December 15 deadline
