The Foundation’s stated mission is to encourage the performance of contemporary concert music, particularly by American composers, through support for organizations that have demonstrated sustained artistic excellence. Its website defines contemporary music as music composed within the last 50 years and says that concert music includes opera, orchestral and chamber music, vocal and instrumental ensembles, and music in experimental genres. It generally does not support jazz or Broadway-style musical theater.

The Amphion Grant Program supports performing and presenting organizations and service organizations. The Spring cycle is for performing organizations; the Fall cycle is for presenters and music service organizations. Eligible applicants must be publicly supported nonprofits or fiscally sponsored organizations, have at least two years of relevant activity, operate at a professional level, and generally have an operating budget of $10 million or less. The website says organizations with larger budgets may be eligible for project support with advance approval. The program offers general operating support to organizations with a substantial commitment to contemporary American concert music, as well as project support for exceptionally important activities in contemporary concert music.

The Elliott Carter Special Grant Program supports significant performance or recording projects involving Elliott Carter’s music, with particular attention to works that are less frequently performed or recorded. The website says the program is open to various kinds of organizations, including performing groups and commercial recording companies.

Examples of grantees’ own stated missions illustrate the range of organizations supported. Boston Modern Orchestra Project describes its work as presenting music from the 20th century to the present, including new compositions and lesser-known works. New Music USA says it supports the creation, performance, and appreciation of new music. Fractured Atlas describes its mission as making the journey from inspiration to practice more accessible and equitable for artists and creatives.
