In filing year 2025, MRHD reported 92 grants totaling $4,026,650. Grant amounts ranged from $2,500 to $1 million, with a median grant of $15,000. Examples include $1 million to Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Sioux City for an expansion of Angeline’s Wing for Children and Families; $560,000 to the Sioux City Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center for operational support and a holiday grant; and $175,000 to Woodbury County Emergency Management for responder radios and vehicle acquisition. Other awards included $115,000 for the Siouxland Historical Railroad Association’s flood recovery project and $100,000 for the June E Nylen Cancer Center’s renovation and expansion project.

MRHD offers competitive Target and Impact Match grants. The Target Grant provides up to $25,000, paid upfront, with no match required. The Impact Match Grant provides $25,000 to $250,000 as a reimbursable award and requires a 25% match; no more than half of the required match may be in-kind. Both programs require applicants to be educational entities, local governments or tax-exempt organizations whose principal place of business and project are within the stated funding area. For both programs, organizations may not receive more than one Target or Impact Match Grant per calendar year and may not have more than two such awards active at once. Recipients have 12 months to complete projects.

Special grants include scholarships, emergency grants and holiday grants. Scholarship awards go to participating organizations, which identify eligible students and administer funds; they are not offered through a competitive application process. Emergency grants may be awarded as MRHD determines, without a regular application period or funding cycle. Holiday grants are discretionary, require no match and are not offered through an application process; organizations are nominated by MRHD Board members.

For the 2026 Target cycle, applications opened March 1 and closed March 31; awards were scheduled for May 21. For the 2026 Impact Match cycle, applications are scheduled to open August 1 and close August 31; awards are scheduled for October 22. Cycle dates and budgets are subject to change. MRHD says competitive grants are reviewed on merit by its Grant Review Committee and ratified by the Board of Directors. Its filing states that grant recipients must provide proof of exempt status before payment and report how funds were used after expenditure.
