Juneau Community Foundation

In 2024, the Foundation reported 37 grants totaling $4,017,340. Grant amounts ranged from $6,500 to $515,000, with a median of $58,000. The largest reported awards included $515,000 to Juneau Housing First Collaborative for housing programs, $423,000 to Gastineau Human Services for substance-abuse and homelessness-related services, and $410,400 to JAMHI Health & Wellness for operating support. Other large awards included $345,333 to Alaska Development Corporation for flood-victim relief, $200,000 to the City and Borough of Juneau for youth shelter and parks, and $186,055 to Alaska Legal Services Corporation for a legal equity program.

The Foundation offers several distinct funding processes. Discretionary grants are limited, cover areas including arts, culture, health, social services, parks, trails, recreation, youth, and education, and are offered on a rolling basis. Applicants must be a 501(c)(3), a governmental unit, or a religious organization with a public-benefit, non-sectarian program. Priority is given to Juneau or Southeast Alaska applicants whose proposed programs benefit residents there. The program excludes individuals, medical fundraisers, partisan political activities, athletic or event sponsorships, endowments, and retroactive expenses or activities. Applicants email a completed application; Foundation staff then follow up to discuss the request.

The Juneau Hope Endowment Fund and City & Borough of Juneau Social Service Grant program support health and social-service needs in Juneau. The Hope Endowment’s stated areas include homelessness, suicide prevention, hospice, substance abuse, mental health, and relief for victims of violence. Its annual process includes community meetings to identify priority needs and review of proposals by a Professional Advisory Committee. A Letter of Interest is a required first step for the 2026 process; the stated January 2026 LOI deadline has passed. The Foundation’s website describes an annual process for the Douglas-Dornan Fund and a separate annual process for the Friends of Gustavus Fund. The Book Hook Fund supports purchases of reading materials for public use at rural Alaskan libraries, with grants ranging from $500 to $1,000.

The CBJ Utility Waiver Funding Program provides sewer and water utility waivers for Juneau 501(c)(3) health and social-service agencies that provide transitional overnight accommodations and have provided services for at least one year. It does not fund capital projects. The Arts Vibrancy Endowment’s Individual Artist Award is for individual artists or collaborations, rather than outside organizations seeking grants.
