The foundation was created from proceeds of the sale of Consumer Cellular, a mobile virtual network operator co-founded by John Marick and Greg Pryor in 1995. The company grew to become the second largest MVNO in the United States with 4 million customers, 2,100 employees, and over $1.5 billion in annual sales before being sold in December 2020.
