Mission & Focus Areas
The Foundation focuses its efforts in two distinct geographic areas and corresponding program areas:
Malaria Elimination in Southern Africa The Foundation is committed to malaria elimination through community mobilization along the shared borders of Angola, Mozambique, Namibia, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. The Foundation's approach is guided by three core principles:
- Community Based: People living in endemic communities are experts in local realities and ultimately determine the success of malaria elimination efforts
- Cross Border: Parasites and mosquitoes do not respect national boundaries, and many families live on both sides and cross frequently
- Collaborative: The Foundation works alongside scientists, local leaders, national governments, religious bodies, and multilateral and non-profit organizations
Key initiatives include:
- Isdell:Flowers Cross Border Malaria Initiative (IFCBMI)
- Faith Leader Advocacy for Malaria Elimination (FLAME)
Re-entry Support in New York The Foundation supports the journey home after incarceration in New York, working to help formerly incarcerated men and women re-integrate into productive society by fostering informal social networks in Harlem and Manhattan.
Additional Focus Areas The Foundation also supports youth through basketball, enhances children's chess programs in Zambia and Zimbabwe, and advances the arts and education.
