DURING HIS TIME AS A LEADER IN BUNCOMBE COUNTYS BLACK COMMUNITY, HE OWNED AND OPERATED THE BLUE NOTE (COMMUNITY STORE), AS WELL AS FOUNDED THE WESTERN REGIONAL AGRICULTURAL FAIR - WHICH DREW CROWDS OF UP TO 10,000 IN ITS HEYDAY. THIS PROJECT WILL USE THE ARTS TO ELEVATE APPRECIATION FOR ONE OF WNC'S OLDEST HISTORIC AFRICAN AMERICAN COMMUNITIES BY CREATING A DIGITAL MAP THAT WILL INCLUDE HISTORICAL PLACES AND EVENTS, AND ADD MOMENTUM TO NEIGHBORHOOD VITALITY BY MAKING VISIBLE AND CONNECTING LOCAL RESOURCES (SKILLS, OPPORTUNITIES, FUNDING, ETC). THIS PROJECT CREATES A CIVIC TOOL THAT UPLIFTS THE LIVED EXPERIENCES OF PEOPLE OFTEN EXCLUDED FROM DOMINANT CULTURE. THE COMMUNITY ASSET MAP WILL MARRY ARTS, HUMANITIES AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT WHILE BUILDING PORTABLE SKILLS IN BURTON STREET NEIGHBORHOOD YOUTH AND OTHER PROJECT PARTICIPANTS.$5,800
