Overview

WSSA Innovative Grants Program

Purpose: Provides seed funding to explore innovative ideas in any area of the weed science discipline that WSSA does not currently fund.

Funder: Weed Science Society of America (WSSA)

Geographic Scope: International (open to WSSA members globally)

Focus Areas:

  • Novel and creative projects within weed science

  • Innovative research and outreach efforts

  • New ideas and approaches not currently funded by other WSSA programs

  • Groundbreaking solutions to challenges in weed management
  • Eligibility:

  • All WSSA members (regular and student members) are eligible

  • Only proposals submitted by WSSA members will be considered

  • Non-WSSA members may serve as collaborators

  • A WSSA member may be listed as lead principal investigator on only one proposal per call

  • Individuals may be listed as a collaborator on more than one proposal

  • WSSA Board of Directors members submitting or collaborating on a proposal will not participate in reviewing and approving proposals during that same period
  • What WSSA Does NOT Fund:

  • Indirect costs or overhead of any type or amount

  • Proposals for areas already funded by other WSSA programs
  • Funding Conditions:

  • Total award pool: $100,000 (can be split among multiple proposals or awarded to one proposal)

  • No renewal of funding for selected proposals

  • Funded proposals must be completed within 2 years of funding

  • Award issuance: December 1 (of proposal year)

  • Lead PI must present results at WSSA annual meeting

  • Final report to WSSA Board of Directors required within 6 months of work completion
  • Review Process:

  • Proposals reviewed by WSSA Executive Committee

  • Award winners approved by WSSA Board of Directors

  • Proposals not selected may be reworked and resubmitted in future calls

  • Activation Trigger:
    A call for proposals is posted when the total asset calculation of the U.S. Bank checking account exceeds $1,500,000 on the last day of April following the annual meeting.

    Proposal Requirements

    Submission Format:

  • PDF document via email

  • Maximum 5 pages (single or double spaced, 1" margins)

  • Required Proposal Components:

    #### a. Cover Page

  • Title: Highlight the major impact of the project (no more than 15 words)

  • Principal Investigator(s): Name, affiliation, address, email, and phone number for each person involved

  • Period of Performance: Starting no earlier than December 1 of the award year
  • #### b. Objectives

  • Clear and concise one-sentence statement for each specific numbered objective

  • Arrange in logical sequence
  • #### c. Procedure

  • Description of activity or investigation

  • Techniques to be used in carrying out proposed work

  • Methods by which experimental data will be analyzed and/or interpreted

  • Procedures for disseminating and implementing results

  • For education/outreach focused activities: Describe intended audience, number of individuals to be reached, and how results will be evaluated (e.g., before and after surveys)

  • Relevance to weed science

  • For education/outreach activities: Description of geographic area to be covered
  • #### f. Budget Justification

  • Itemized budget indicating how requested funds will be used

  • Eligible uses: equipment, supplies, labor, travel, and other costs

  • Indirect costs and overhead are NOT fundable
  • #### g. Related Information

  • Summary of most significant related work

  • Include appropriate citations
  • #### h. Expected Outcome(s)

  • Brief yet complete description of expected outcomes

  • Potential impact of the proposed work

  • May include: generation of new information, publications, software, etc.
  • Post-Award Deliverables:

  • Annual Update: Due June 15 (includes how funding has been useful; if/how it has helped leverage additional grants)

  • Final Report: Due prior to the annual WSSA meeting after project completion

  • - Abstract (~500 words) with figures and/or tables
    - Poster or oral presentation at annual WSSA meeting
