WMU Department of History: Cheryl Lyon-Jenness Writing Award Grant

The Cheryl Lyon-Jenness Writing Award at Western Michigan University honors outstanding undergraduate research papers exceeding 4,000 words. Open to diverse historical topics, it evaluates mastery of writing, analytical thought, and language use. Eligible submissions include senior theses and critical reviews prepared during recent semesters. The award recipient receives a stipend of $350, recognizing their exceptional academic work and contribution to historical scholarship.

The Cheryl Lyon-Jenness Advanced Undergraduate writing award honors student papers exceeding 4,000 words that fall under the broad rubric of research papers. This includes senior theses, historiographical works, material culture or museum related pieces, methodological/theoretical analyses, and critical review essays. Submissions are unrestricted as to historical subject and will be judged according to the following criteria:
Mastery of writing skills necessary for effective communicationAppropriate thought in the interpretation and analysis of historical informationClear, concise expression and nuanced use of language.
The recipient of the Cheryl Lyon-Jenness writing award receives a stipend of $350.

Eligibility

Only papers prepared for the previous spring, fall, summer, and/or current academic semesters will be considered. Submissions are unrestricted as to historical subject.
