William Stevens Powell Award

Purpose: Recognizes a graduating senior in The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill who is judged to have contributed most to an understanding of the history and traditions of the first state university, or who has done the most to develop interest in and understanding of the history of the state of North Carolina.

Established: 2002

Named In Honor Of: William Stevens Powell, first president, long-time vice-president, and distinguished historian of the North Caroliniana Society

Geographic Scope: UNC at Chapel Hill; recognizes contributions to understanding of North Carolina history

Eligibility:

  • UNC at Chapel Hill graduating seniors only

  • Judged on contributions to understanding of:

  • - History and traditions of the first state university, OR
    - History of the state of North Carolina
