Overview

Pittsburgh Foundation The The Pittsburgh Foundation was founded in 1945 by Charles McKinley, a civic leader who envisioned a permanent charitable institution that could pool resources from individuals, families, and organizations to address the evolving needs of the Pittsburgh region. His founding vision emphasized local stewardship, donor intent, and long-term community impact, creating a flexible philanthropic model that could respond to both immediate challenges and future opportunities. Today, the Foundation continues to honor McKinley’s legacy by strengthening communities through grantmaking, civic leadership, and partnerships that promote equity, opportunity, and quality of life across southwestern Pennsylvania. William J. Wolf Memorial Scholarship Fund The William J. Wolf Memorial Scholarship Fund was created at The Pittsburgh Foundation by a bequest from William J. Wolf, founder and president of General Cleaning Company. Although Mr. Wolf completed high school, he did not have the means to attend college, which he regretted. Through the establishment of this fund, he is able to give back in perpetuity to the Pittsburgh community that he and his wife, Elizabeth, loved, and to the Lutheran religion which they supported during their lifetimes. This scholarship is to assist with the college or graduate level education of students with a preference for those applicants who draw upon Lutheran teachings in their worldview.
