Tree Canopy Community Grant

Geographic Scope: Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana

Funder: Faith in Place (regranting USDA Forest Service Urban Community Forestry grant funded through the Inflation Reduction Act)

Award Amount: $1.9 million total distributed to over 50 faith-based organizations and community partners

  • Solomon Community Temple (Milwaukee, WI) - tree planting to combat extreme heat and improve air/water quality

  • Stone Temple Baptist Church (Chicago, IL) - tree canopy expansion in historically disinvested neighborhoods

  • Purdue Polytechnic High Schools (Indianapolis, IN) - tree planting with summer workforce training
  • Status: As of February 2025, grant funds have been frozen by the Trump administration and are subject to legal action to release them. Over 50 awardees are awaiting fund disbursement.
