Welch Foundation Research Grant

The Welch Foundation Research Grant supports fundamental chemical research at Texas educational institutions. With a minimum funding of $117,000 per year for three years, it encourages innovative research proposals from full-time faculty members. Eligible applicants include universities and colleges listed by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board. However, Welch endowed chair holders and projects with scientific overlap with current funding are ineligible. This grant fosters advancements in chemistry, enhancing the state's academic landscape.

The Welch Foundation, based in Houston, Texas, is one of the nation's largest private funding sources for basic chemical research. Since its founding in 1954, the organization has contributed to the advancement of chemistry through research grants, departmental programs, endowed chairs and other special projects at educational institutions in Texas.
Purpose
The purpose of the research grant program is to support fundamental chemical research at educational institutions within the state of Texas.
Funding
A research grant provides a minimum of $117,000 per year. Proposals should contain a completed three-year budget for $117,000 per year.
The grantee may use funds for fellowships, scholarships, permanent scientific equipment, expendable scientific items, services, equipment maintenance, publication expenses, and travel according to The Foundation’s guidelines.

Eligibility

Applications are restricted to universities, colleges or other educational institutions located within the state of Texas and also listed as an educational institution by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board.A principal investigator applying for a research grant must be a full-time regular faculty member with tenure or on the tenure track. Any Co-PI must meet the same eligibility standards as the principal investigator.Only one proposal per year may be submitted by a principal investigator. Principal Investigators or Co-Principal Investigators can hold only one research grant at a time. Faculty in a department which has a Departmental grant are eligible to apply for a research grant. Welch research grant proposals should have no scientific overlap with any current externally funded projects.Proposals should describe work that encompasses a three-year period.

Ineligibility

Welch endowed chair holders are not eligible to apply for a research grant. The following are excluded as direct expenditures:General office supplies, equipment or expenses.Building construction, alteration, renovation, rent or utilities.Personnel expenses other than fellowships and scholarships as detailed above.Consultant fees and/or related expenditures.Student tuition or fees.Membership dues.Overhead.
