Wanda Y. Gibbs "Bridge Over Troubled Waters" Memorial Scholarship/Fellowship

Overview: Named scholarship/fellowship established in 2023 to honor educator and community advocate Wanda Y. Gibbs, who passed away in July 2022. Supports students from Riverside Education Academy pursuing education at Gateway Community College.

Eligibility:

  • Riverside Education Academy graduates

  • Must have documented merit or financial need

  • Must be enrolled in a degree or certificate program at Gateway Community College
  • Purpose: To decrease barriers for vulnerable New Haven students and continue Wanda Gibbs' legacy of educational advocacy

    About Wanda Gibbs:

  • Lifelong educator and community activist

  • Relocated to New Haven, CT in 1965

  • Held progressive teaching and administrative positions in New Haven public schools

  • Principal of Riverside Education Academy from 1994 until retirement

  • Later served as Interim Principal of West Rock Stream Academy and Troup Middle School, and Principal on Special Assignment at Wexler-Grant Elementary School

  • Pursued education at Quinnipiac University, New Hampshire College, Fairfield University, and Southern Connecticut State University
  • Established by: Tanya Gibbs-Scott (daughter) and family members
