About Us WAAIME is now a division of SME, through a merger in 2008. Since the merger WAAIME has continued to support students with scholarships. WAAIME (formerly known as the Women’s Auxiliary to the American Institute of Mining Engineers) was created on February 20, 1917 to do philanthropic work in local mining communities where members lived, providing service to the country, to the community and to provide scholarships. Scholarship Application Guidelines WAAIME scholarships provide financial assistance to students pursuing degrees in earth sciences and engineering disciplines, including but not limited to: MiningGeologyMetallurgyPetroleumMineral SciencesMaterials ScienceMineral EconomicsChemical EngineeringOther related fields Membership Requirement Applicants attending a college or university in the United States must be a student or professional member in good standing of one of the four AIME member societies: Association for Iron and Steel Technology (AIST)Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration (SME)Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE)The Minerals, Metals, and Materials Society (TMS) Maximum Number of Scholarships Eligible students may receive up to three WAAIME scholarships during their academic career. Only one scholarship may be awarded per year, and the years do not need to be consecutive. Students must reapply each year to be considered for future awards.

Eligible students must be enrolled in accredited colleges or universities located in the United States.To qualify for a WAAIME scholarship, applicants must meet the following requirementsDeclared MajorMust have officially declared a major in an eligible earth science or engineering discipline.Academic StandingScholarships are available to students in their sophomore, junior, or senior year, as well as to master’s degree candidates.Applications may be submitted as early as the second semester of the freshman year.Enrollment StatusStudents must be enrolled full-time for the upcoming academic year, defined as a minimum of 12 credit hours per semester or as determined by their university’s full-time enrollment policy.Degree LevelPriority is given to undergraduate students. Master’s students are considered based on financial need. You must be a member of this organization to apply for this award - become a member. Student members of any AIME Member Society (AIST, SME, SPE, TMS) are eligible, and are encouraged to apply. Membership in one of the member societies is required to apply for this scholarship.

PhD candidates are not eligible.
