Overview

Uprooting Racism Training (URFS)

Status: Active; 2026 sessions scheduled

Geographic Scope: Virtual (Zoom-based), open to anyone

Target Audience: Environmental and food justice leaders, organizational staff, individuals committed to anti-racism work

Session Format: 3-hour interactive virtual workshop with 90-150 participants per session (breakout groups for intimate conversations)

Purpose

A theory and action workshop for environmental and food justice leaders to uproot systemic racism in organizations and society. Participants delve deep into the history and structural realities of racial injustice, develop understanding of movement strategies of frontline communities struggling for food sovereignty, examine personal and societal roles of complicity in and resistance to systemic racism, and develop tangible action plans to use their sphere of influence to uproot oppression. Rooted in fierce love, courageous self-reflection, and healing connection to land.

Curriculum Overview

Pre-Work (2-3 hours required):

  • Exploration of the "4 I's of Oppression"

  • Reflection on applicability to organization and community

  • Mandatory completion before attending workshop
  • Workshop (1 hour 25 minutes + break + 1 hour 25 minutes):

  • History of racial oppression and resistance in the food system

  • Personal reflection on privilege, bias, and decision-points

  • Equity rubric to assess organization's role in ending racism

  • Review of 100+ actions for racial equity in organizations

  • Beginning of action plan toward uprooting racism
  • Post-Work:

  • Organization's change team convenes to complete action plan

  • Share action plan with accountability partner

    • Laptop or computer recommended (highly visual and interactive)
    • Pre-work and Zoom link emailed to registrants

    Registration Process

    Individual Registration:
    1. Visit Eventbrite page for desired workshop date
    2. Complete registration form
    3. Pay sliding scale fee ($75–$150 per person)
    4. Receive confirmation message with pre-work link
    5. Complete pre-work (2–3 hours) before workshop
    6. Receive Zoom link morning of training

    Group Registration (10–30 people):
    1. Complete Group Interest Form on website
    2. Await confirmation and registration instructions from Program Team
    3. Confirm date availability (first come, first serve basis)
    4. Primary contact receives Quickbooks Invoice for honorarium amount
    5. Pay invoice
    6. Receive registration instructions for all group members
    7. Primary contact ensures all members complete registration to receive pre-work and Zoom link

      Pre-Work Requirements

    • Duration: 2–3 hours
    • Content: Anti-racism 101 covering foundational concepts and language
    • Status: Mandatory prerequisite for workshop attendance
    • Format: PDF packet with readings and reflection questions
    • Delivery: Emailed via Eventbrite after registration; also available on Eventbrite event page
    • Note: Limited capacity to respond to individual pre-work questions; participants encouraged to do their "imperfect best"
