Translational Strategies to Define, Enhance, and Monitor Vascularization for Durable Islet Replacement Therapies Grant

Status: ACTIVE
Funder: Breakthrough T1D ( Formally JDRF International)
Amount: Up to US $900,000
Last Updated: December 18, 2025

Summary

Breakthrough T1D is initiating a funding opportunity for translational research aimed at improving islet replacement therapies in type 1 diabetes (T1D). This initiative focuses on enhancing vascularization and engraftment strategies, with projects required to define vascular features predictive of graft function, improve vascular integration and resilience at transplant sites, or develop non-invasive monitoring technologies. Grants of up to $900,000 are available for a maximum duration of three years, open to both nonprofit and for-profit entities.

Overview

Note: An approved Letter of Intent (LOI) is required prior to the submission of a full proposal. The deadlines are indicated above. Breakthrough T1D Founded in 1970 by families whose loved ones had been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes (T1D), Breakthrough T1D is a tax-exempt nonprofit 501(c)3 organization. We are opening doors that were once closed by T1D diagnosis. We lead the way to more effective solutions by connecting the brightest minds to advance treatments, influence policy, and improve access to care. By driving innovation forward, Breakthrough T1D will make type 1 diabetes a condition of the past. Translational Strategies to Define, Enhance, and Monitor Vascularization for Durable Islet Replacement Therapies Summary Breakthrough T1D is launching a new funding opportunity to support translational research that advances the clinical application of vascularization- and engraftment-focused strategies for islet replacement therapy in type 1 diabetes (T1D). Funded projects must address at least one of the following areas: 1) define vascular features that correlate with or predict graft function and long-term durability; 2) advance strategies to enhance vascular integration, perfusion and graft resilience at extrahepatic transplant sites; or 3) advance non-invasive technologies to monitor neovascularization, perfusion, vascular stability, and oxygenation in vivo. This Request for Applications (RFA) will provide grants of up to $900,000 for a maximum duration of three years. Both non-profit (e.g., academic institutions) and for-profit entities (e.g., biotechnology companies) are eligible to apply.
