Background: Named in honor of Tona Vives, mother of NBA player Ricky Rubio. Tona was 56 years old and a nonsmoker when she died of lung cancer in May 2016. Ricky Rubio partnered with A Breath of Hope to increase funding for lung cancer research, raise awareness, and support patients and families. His efforts raised close to $75,000 in donations from his fans and followers, which qualified him to have a national research award named after his mother.
