Background: Named in honor of Katherine Bensen, who was diagnosed with stage 4 non-small cell lung cancer in December 2014 at age 40. As a young nonsmoker and mother of four, her diagnosis was unexpected. She fought her cancer for five years. In December 2019, the Fruth Family Foundation honored Katherine with a generous $50,000 matching gift designated to A Breath of Hope's research program. The A Breath of Hope community met this matching challenge by the end of 2019. Inspired by Katherine's courage, A Breath of Hope announced The Katherine Bensen Hope Award.
