Funder: Boys & Girls Clubs of the Northland

Background: The Overman Scholarship Fund was established in 1978 to honor the memory of Duluthians Ben Overman and his wife Jeanne Horowitz Overman. Since inception, the fund has provided more than $500,000 in scholarships to more than 130 deserving young men and women.

Eligibility

• Primary: Current and former members of Boys & Girls Clubs of the Northland
• Membership requirement: No defined minimum length of membership; applicant must have been actively involved in the Club
• GPA requirements: None specified; however, recipients must report grades and finances to continue receiving funds
• Income requirements: No specific income level requirements, though financial need is considered during award process

Award Details

• Award type: Need-based scholarship
• Renewable: YES - Recipients in good standing can apply annually as needed
• Eligible post-secondary programs: 4-year degrees, vocational or technical programs, 2-year programs, and other post-secondary education
• Geographic scope: Serves Boys & Girls Clubs of the Northland members (Minnesota and Wisconsin locations: Duluth, Lincoln Park, Grand Rapids, Greenway, Hibbing, Superior, Gary, New Duluth)

Key Dates

• Deadline: January 15 of each year (Note: brochure may state April 1)
• Award timing: Funds awarded in August
• Interview process: Selected candidates participate in interviews conducted by Overman Scholarship Board of Trustees
