Sydney L. Cousin Memorial Scholarship

Funder: Bright Minds Foundation (Howard County Public Schools Education Foundation)

Purpose: Honor the life and legacy of Dr. Sydney L. Cousin, former HCPSS superintendent (2004-2012), and support students pursuing careers in public school teaching.

Geographic Scope: Howard County Public School System (HCPSS), Maryland

Eligibility:

  • HCPSS graduates

  • Currently enrolled in or completed a teacher education program at Howard Community College (HCC)

  • Accepted for continued study in teacher education at an accredited four-year college/university
  • Award Details:

  • Amount: $1,000 per recipient

  • Number of awards: Typically 1-2 per year

  • Use of funds: Tuition, fees, or cost of books
  • Background:
    Dr. Sydney L. Cousin joined HCPSS in 1987 as director of school construction and planning. He became the system's first African American superintendent in July 2004 and served until retirement in July 2012. He passed away in August 2018. The scholarship was established effective December 2, 2018.

    1. HCC students should contact Laurie B. Collins, Assistant Professor and Chair of the Teacher Education Program at Howard Community College (lcollins2@howardcc.edu) for application details
    2. Submit completed application via the process specified by HCC
    3. Applications are reviewed in spring for May awards

  • Demonstration of completion or enrollment in teacher education transfer program at HCC

  • Evidence of acceptance to an accredited four-year college/university for continued teacher education study

  • Standard scholarship application materials (specific requirements available from HCC)
