Overview

NOTE: Applicants are encouraged to begin by consulting with their institution’s contracts and grants office for information regarding the processing requirements for grant applications to ensure compliance with institutional policies and procedures. Mid Career Award This award is intended for SUS members in good standing in the United States or Canada with a history of research funding to support their continued research in the basic, translational, clinical/outcomes, or education surgical sciences. Funding This is a one-year award of $40,000. The funds can be used for either salary or expense support, but must be expended solely for the sponsored research project. No indirect costs will be covered. Generally, indirect costs would refer to costs such as electricity, water, internet services, janitorial services, paid to the institution at which the research is conducted. The stipend is expected to cover the cost of the awardee presentation requirement which is listed below (i.e. no additional travel funds will be provided). The purchase of any equipment greater than $1,000 must be adequately justified in a budget justification section.

Eligibility

Members that are eligible include those who:have previously been a PI on a major independent grant (R01 or equivalent),are currently or have previously been a PI on a smaller grant (R21/R03 or equivalent pilot grant)have previously held or are in the final year of a K- or equivalent career development award. This award is intended to serve as bridge funding for those who have submitted within the past two years an application as PI for an independent grant (R-series or equivalent) but were not funded. A Summary Statement from the most recent application is required. This award intends to support applicants who have previously applied for funding, it is acceptable (even suggested) to submit a Research Plan that has previously been submitted or a revised Research Plan that is being prepared for resubmission. You must be a member of this organization to apply for this award - become a member.

Ineligibility

SUS Members listed as a PI or co-PI on an active R01, DOD, PCORI, or equivalent large foundation grant are not eligible. The award recipient may not currently hold a similar type of award from another surgical society.
