Overview: A summer fellowship program supporting undergraduate and graduate students interested in ophthalmology and eye/vision research. Part of Fight for Sight's mission to support and inspire eye and vision research by funding promising scientists early in their careers.

Background: Founded in 1946 by Mildred Weisenfeld (a woman with retinitis pigmentosa) to encourage and fund research in ophthalmology and vision sciences. Over 3,000 recipients have received over $21 million in support. For many summer students, an FFS funded research project may be their first exposure to ophthalmology or eye research.

Review Process: Applications are evaluated by the Scientific Review Committee (SRC) annually. The SRC ranks applications based on: qualifications and accomplishments of applicant, scientific merit of research proposal, clinical relevance of project, and resources/facilities/institutional support. Review system is modeled on NIH peer review methods.
