Subud House Grants - Property Acquisition and Capital Improvement

Program Purpose: The Muhammad Subuh Foundation (MSF) provides grants to Subud groups worldwide to support property acquisition and capital improvement projects for Subud houses used for Latihan Kejiwaan (spiritual practice).

Geographic Scope: International; serves Subud groups that are members of the World Subud Association (WSA)

  • Groups must demonstrate at least 50% of project funding from their own resources before applying

  • Must provide evidence of broad harmony among members to support and maintain the Subud property

  • Must have an established business plan for commercial use of the house in accordance with local and national laws

  • Recipients must be able to begin using funds within 15 months of final agreement signing

  • Expected project completion within 24 months of agreement signing
  • What MSF Does Not Fund:

  • Projects that do not align with foundation priorities

  • Projects that cannot demonstrate 50% local funding commitment

  • Activities that violate U.S. National Security Laws

  • Political activities or support for violence/terrorism

  • Routine operational expenses (rather than capital projects)
  • Grant Terms:

  • MSF does not fund 100% of projects

  • Minimum 50% local funding required before applying

  • Funds disbursed on "just-in-time" basis once project is ready to begin

  • Recipients must provide written reports detailing accomplishments and financial statements in USD

  • Recipients must comply with U.S. tax regulations and foundation stipulations

  • Background:
    The Muhammad Subuh Foundation was established in 1991 to build durable financial capacity for the global Subud community. It is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation registered in Virginia, USA. The foundation operates three pillars: support for Subud houses, support for international helper travel, and preservation of Bapak and Ibu Rahayu's teachings.

    Application Process

    Two Cycles Per Year (as of 2026)
    MSF offers two grant application cycles annually to accommodate different group timelines.

    Stage 1: Eligibility Assessment (Mandatory)

    1. Review the Grant Process Guide and MSF Grant Policy to confirm project eligibility
    2. Complete the Stage 1 – Eligibility Form
    3. MSF confirms alignment with foundation priorities and basic requirements
    4. This is NOT the full application; approval required to proceed to Stage 2

    Cycle 1 Timeline (for first-half-of-year funding):

  • Stage 1 Application Period: January 2 – February 28

  • Stage 2 Application Period: March 1 – April 30

  • Application Evaluation: March – May

  • Decision, Agreement & Fund Transfer: June – July
  • Cycle 2 Timeline (for second-half-of-year funding):

  • Stage 1 Application Period: June 1 – July 31

  • Stage 2 Application Period: August 1 – September 30

  • Application Evaluation: August – October

  • Decision, Agreement & Fund Transfer: November – December
  • Stage 2: Complete Application (By Invitation Only)

    1. Available only to groups whose Stage 1 application is approved
    2. MSF sends Stage 2 – Application Form directly to eligible applicants
    3. Submit comprehensive project proposal including:
    - Detailed project planning
    - Complete budget with itemized costs
    - Supporting documentation
    - Evidence of 50% local funding secured
    - Business plan for commercial use of property
    - Documentation of member harmony/support
    - Proof of property ownership or commitment of responsibility

    Application Requirements:

  • Pre-application form submission is mandatory for all grant applications

  • Detailed project descriptions

  • Financial statements and budgets in USD

  • Letters of agreement/commitment from group members

  • Evidence of local funding sources and amounts

  • Business plans aligned with local/national regulations

  • Architectural plans or renovation specifications (as applicable)
  • Review and Support Process:

  • MSF may request clarifications, additional information, or meetings

  • MSF may solicit feedback from international collaborators and zone representatives

  • Groups encouraged to contact MSF early, even during planning stages

  • MSF offers workshops and 1:1 personalized meetings via Zoom

  • Stage 3: Evaluation

  • MSF carefully reviews each Stage 2 application for alignment with foundation priorities, project feasibility, and potential impact

  • May request additional clarifications or meetings
  • Stage 4: Decision, Agreement & Fund Transfer

  • All applicants receive notification of decision

  • Approved applicants receive grant agreement detailing terms and conditions

  • Funds transferred once agreement is signed and project is ready to begin

  • When possible, MSF provides feedback to support future applications
