Summary

The Theory & Computation Award for Early Career Scientists, offered by the Biophysical Society, recognizes emerging scientists in the fields of biophysics. This award, which includes a $1500 prize, aims to foster excellence in theoretical and computational biophysical research. Eligible candidates must be within six years of their first independent appointment and active members of the Biophysical Society and its Theory & Computation Subgroup. Recipients are required to present their work at the BPS Annual Meeting.

Overview

NOTE: The deadline represents when the Nomination is due. What Is Biophysics? Biophysics is the field that applies the theories and methods of physics to understand how biological systems work. Biophysics has been critical to understanding the mechanics of how the molecules of life are made, how different parts of a cell move and function, and how complex systems in our bodies—the brain, circulation, immune system, and others— work. Biophysics is a vibrant scientific field where scientists from many fields including math, chemistry, physics, engineering, pharmacology, and materials sciences, use their skills to explore and develop new tools for understanding how biology—all life—works. Theory and Computation (T&C) Subgroup The purpose of the Theory and Computation Subgroup is to better highlight and network biophysicists who are interested in theoretical and computational aspects of biophysical systems, to provide a scientific forum for mini-symposia before Biophysical Society (BPS) meetings, to elevate the visibility and importance of theory and simulation within BPS overall, and to attract new members to BPS in this area. Theory & Computation Award for Early Career Scientists This award is for early career scientists working in the topical areas covered by the Theory and Computation (T&C) Subgroup. The award comes with a monetary prize of $1500 which the awardee can use as they please, including to help defray the costs of travel to the BPS Annual Meeting. The award recipient must present a talk on Subgroup Saturday in the T&C Subgroup Symposium. The nomination letters should highlight the nominee’s contributions to the T&C community evidenced by their service (10%), leadership (10%), productivity (50%), and innovation (30%).
