Overview

Student Grantmaking Program

Overview: DPS Foundation's first ever Student Grantmaking Advisory Committee, created in early 2024 to give DPS students a voice in grantmaking, help them effect change in their schools and communities, and return power to DPS students through direct funding for their ideas and projects.

Geographic Scope: Denver Public Schools, Colorado

Eligibility:

  • DPS high school students

  • First committee comprised of six DPS students from four different high schools
  • Focus Areas:

  • Student-led projects and initiatives

  • Removing barriers to student participation in programs

  • Student-led grants supporting other students

  • Individual student grants
  • What They Fund:

  • Student ideas and projects

  • Initiatives to remove barriers and increase participation in programs (e.g., internship/apprenticeship programs)

  • Student ambassador programs serving new-to-country students
  • Background:

  • Created in early 2024

  • Awarded more than $25,000 to students and groups in initial grant cycle

  • Initial grant made possible by DPS Foundation board member Rebecca Grant Zarret and her husband Scott Zarret

  • Recent grants: Cruz from West High School received $3,000 to remove barriers and increase participation in DPS Department of Technology Services student internship/apprenticeship program; Sara from North High School received $730 to start Northstar Ambassador Program
