Background

The award grew out of WMF's Modernism Program, which champions the preservation of modernist architecture at risk of damage or demolition. Established in 2026, the inaugural winner was Umbrella House (Anne and Robert Essner's restoration of a 1953 Paul Rudolph design in Sarasota, Florida).

Complements the World Monument Fund / Knoll Modernism Prize, which recognizes outstanding conservation of modernist public buildings.

Selection Criteria (2026)

• Modernist homes that have been restored within the last ten years
• Homes that have faced threats affecting the site before project implementation
• Eligible threats include: deterioration of original materials, obsolescence, abandonment, or inappropriate changes in use, ownership, economic, or political conditions
• Exemplary stewardship practices that set a benchmark for thoughtful preservation of modernist homes
